Pet Store or Shelter?

I'm a sucker for kittens, and when I see those cute kittens in front of the pet store at the mall it is hard to resist.

But I do resist. When I am ready to bring a kitten home I go to the animal shelter at our local SPCA.

Why? Well those pet store pets will always find a kind hearted soul to bring them home, but the kittens at the shelter need someone to save them. If they are not adopted they are toast.

Not only that, but adopting from the animal shelter gives you the assurance that the animal has been checked out and inoculated. Often it means the animal has already been spayed or neutered or that you can have that done at reduced cost. It requires you to do it, thus reducing the huge number of homeless animals (if your pet has a litter you may find homes for the babies, but other homeless animals won't get those homes). And finally it supports the shelters that take care of animals in need.

So I enjoy seeing those kittens at the mall, but when it comes to bringing one home, I go to the shelter every time.
